Live birth photos are priceless. A lot of people would never think to have their birth experience photographed. If they do think about it at all, it’s might be followed by an uneasy feeling and maybe the thought that it’s just not something they would care for. Most people don’t really love the idea of having their picture taken at all. Add that to the overwhelming feelings and unknown outcome surrounding a birth, especially if it’s the first baby, and it just seems like too much to deal with.
I had no idea that birth photography existed when I gave birth. Had I known, I’m not sure I would have chosen to have it done. I remember hearing about people who videotaped their births and thinking, ‘”why on earth would they ever want to go back and watch that!?” Now that I’ve seen the beautiful way in which the story can be told, I will forever regret that I don’t have those memories to look back on. When you’re the person giving birth, it is such an intense experience that you can’t really take it all in and recall it later. You won’t remember just what it was like or what emotions you felt. To be able to look back on this life altering day and experience the story from the outside is just amazing.
I was so lucky to have had the opportunity to not only be there for this birth, but also to photograph it! This being their first baby, they were unsure if they would really want a photographer in the room. They had no idea how they would actually feel in that moment. They knew that they definitely wanted pictures just before and just after the birth, and knew that at a moments notice I would step out of the room and only return when they asked for me. I did end up staying through the entire birth which was incredible! I was able to blend in with the room and nurses, and they forgot I was even there most of the time. I have not shown the actual birth pictures here for obvious reasons, but they are very tastefully done. This family is so thankful that they have these pictures of one of the most important events in their lives. I feel so blessed to have been there and to have been able to provide them with these special memories.
